dornhaus@arizona.edu - yes I receive a LOT of emails so it might take a while to get to yours. But I would love to hear what questions you have about our work or this website.

Events in tucson

Insect Festival - annually, typically in October, on the UA Campus (free)

College of Science Public Lectures - annual series with changing topics; lectures in person and on youtube (free)

Courses for the public

Humanities Seminars Program - 4-10 week courses on a changing set of topics; I have in the past taught:

School visits

The Cricket Project - we help teachers in K-12 classrooms implement real scientific investigations using insects and other subjects

Insect show and tell - we are happy to come to younger classrooms (preschool-Kinder) just with show and tell materials and some fun coloring and worksheets on insects (contact dornhaus@arizona.edu)

Other K-12 programs

KEYS Program - high-schoolers can do an internship in real science labs on the UA campus in the summer, including in our lab.

FUSION Summer Camp at Flandreau - a science-focused summer camp: some weeks are dedicated to insects!

SkySchool - hands-on investigations for middle to high schoolers either in a residential program on Mt Lemmon or in town (Tucson)

Videos

Anna’s YouTube channel - several general and professional talks on video. I recommend:

  • What it means to be human’ 2008 College of Science public lecture series - on how insects can do most of the things we do, cognitively

  • Evolution of mind and brain’ 2010 College of Science public lecture series - on how we know that the brain, and the mind, evolves, and how it does

  • What makes life interesting’ 2015 College of Science public lecture series - Life, as opposed to non-living things, has complexity and evolvability; what does this mean and where does it come from?

  • What is intelligence’ 2019 College of Science public lecture series - How does ‘intelligence’ work, and what has science found out about it?

  • Why isn’t everyone smarter?’ 2021 scientific seminar (Tucson) - our results on cognition in insects, but also how psychology and biology have historically used different approaches with different results

  • Collective organization and evidence’ 2022 scientific seminar (Wuerzburg) - our results on division of labor and communication in ants and other social insects
